We have seen that this would be endangered since we now have an agreement so that the products coming out of the Amazon or Peru come from places where deforestation is not taking place or changing the use of the land”, he pointed out.

The vice-governor asked the Ministry of the Environment (Minam) to convene a working meeting with the authorities of the Amazon regions, in order to propose the repeal of this amendment that seriously harms the management of forests in Peru.

“The spirit of the law, for its compliance, has to come from the population upwards, but in this case they are always imposing it on us, so we cannot accept it (…) We are part of the Amazon Regional Commonwealth, and the Amazon regions and we have not been consulted, nobody has asked us. Therefore, we believe that a meeting has to be held with the regional authorities, the Minam and civil society, with them we have to reach a consensus agreement so that this regulation can be repealed”, he explained.

Amazonas, February 28, 2024.
