The first cases of deforestation due to illegal mining in the Nanay river basin of Iquitos were detected in a satellite monitoring carried out by the Association for the Conservation of the Amazon Basin (ACCA), which is carried out with the support of the Foundation for Conservation and Sustainable Development (FCDS Peru) in the framework of the project “Reducing the advance of illegal gold mining in transboundary landscapes of Colombia, Peru and Brazil”.

ACCA’s geographic information systems specialist, Sidney Novoa, explained that after analyzing high-resolution images, the initial loss of 0.2 hectares of forest cover has been detected very close to the Alvarenga native community, within the Pintuyacu-Chambira Regional Conservation Area in the Loreto region.

“The first case of deforestation was detected last year in the Alvarenga native community. This year we have detected the expansion of illegal mining in riparian forests, in vegetation on the Nanay River side, in an area where dredgers mostly operate,” he said.

Likewise, satellite monitoring carried out between January and March detected close to 30 active dredges operating illegally in the upper Nanay river basin, which represents an increase of more than 50 % with respect to the monitoring carried out in 2023.

“It is important to be alert because we do not see a reduction in the presence of illegal mining dredges. It is necessary to change to another type of action, another type of strategy (…) What is required in the Nanay River is a special treatment”, Novoa said.

Along these lines, the technical specialist of the United for Forests initiative of the FCDS Peru, Martin Arana, pointed out that this report shows that illegal mining in the Nanay River has begun to expand towards the riverbanks, compromising areas of floodable forests and possibly low terraces.

“This situation is doubly worrisome because, on the one hand, it shows that the actions to eradicate illegal mining that were recently carried out in the riverbed have not been sufficient. On the other hand, the expansion of mining in the surrounding forests implies not only the contamination and destruction of water bodies and the water system, but also the deforestation, contamination and destruction of terrestrial ecosystems,” he explained.

After analyzing high-resolution images, the initial loss of 0.2 hectares of forest cover has been detected very close to the native community of Alvarenga, within the Pintuyacu-Chambira Regional Conservation Area, in the Loreto region. If the miners are not stopped in the Nanay, it will no longer be a few hectares, but hundreds of hectares,” he said.

It should be noted that this satellite analysis information was collected in the RAMI Bulletin No. 36 prepared by ACCA, which aims to generate alerts on the advance of illegal mining in the Peruvian Amazon.
