As part of the campaign “Youth united for the forests”, various youth organizations in the San Martin region painted a mural on environmental defenders in front of the Juan Jimenez Pimentel school in the city of Tarapoto. The purpose was to pay homage and present the risks faced by human rights defenders when they exercise their role to protect the Peruvian Amazon.

The mural was designed, drawn and painted by the young people themselves during a workshop held by the United for Forests initiative of the Foundation for Conservation and Sustainable Development (FCDS-Peru), in which they shared concepts on mural painting and human rights defenders to strengthen their capacities.

Graphic artist Miguel Correa, one of those responsible for the workshop, explained that this mural represents the young people’s concern about the loss of Amazonian forests, the advance of illegal activities and the risks faced by environmental defenders in the San Martin region. For this reason, the mural incorporates visual elements of flora, fauna and native peoples of the department.

“This mural reflects the concern of young people before the imminent attack on the Amazon forests, before the attack on the defenders of the forests, the people who fight every day to conserve what is ours (…) This mural is important because it allows us to raise the alarm that there are people who are committed to the care of our forests and who unfortunately suffer or: just as trees die, are cut down, are cut down, there are lives that are disappearing,” he said.

Regional Roundtable of Human Rights Defenders

In September 2022, the San Martin Regional Roundtable for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders was established to address the risks faced by human rights defenders in this region, which has yet to formalize its formalization through a regional ordinance.

In this regard, the youth organizations highlighted the urgency and need for this Roundtable to be formally recognized by the Regional Government of San Martin, so that it has legal recognition and is institutionalized as an official space for articulation between different State entities.

The young Kevin Inuma from the native community of Santa Rosillo de Yanayacu, son of the late indigenous leader Quinto Inuma, considered it necessary to formalize the Regional Roundtable for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders in order to give greater legitimacy to the actions taken to protect the lives of environmental defenders
.

“As a young person from an indigenous people, after the death of my father, seeing the things that have happened, (I consider that) it is necessary to formalize this Regional Roundtable for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders to give them greater legitimacy. This helps the communities and the human rights defenders
, because whatever may happen, they will have more support, more commitment from the State. We hope that the Regional Government becomes aware of things: we are not asking for something that will be bad for the youth, but something that will be good for everyone”, he pointed out.

Likewise, Mercedes Torres, member of the youth organization Ikam Yacha, said that for this reason the young people who participated in the workshop organized themselves to represent in this mural the reality that environmental defenders go through in the Peruvian Amazon, in order to raise awareness among the authorities and the population about the courageous role they play.

“As a young person, I consider the formalization of the Sint Maarten Regional Roundtable for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders to be important, since it guarantees the protection of people who defend our forests, our biodiversity, our rivers and our entire environment,” he said.

“This mural reflects the concern of young people about the imminent attack on the Amazon forests,” explains Mercedes Torres, a member of the youth organization Ikam Yacha.
